I'm a writer. I read a lot of comics. My friend Jojo is an artist. She doesn't read any comics.

At lunch, she draws super heroes from memory. Her memory is not always very good.

As you look at these drawings, I can not stress enough that Jojo is a professional artist, and a full grown woman. It's important to remember that.

Today Jojo draws Supergirl!
I don’t know how we’ve done this blog for almost a year and not drawn Supergirl, but here we are.
Supergirl, she should have the simplest back story of them all (she’s exactly Superman but, you know, a girl) but of course it’s gotten pretty crazy over the years. For a while she was a weird shape-shifting robot and then she was an angel or something. I dunno, comics are weird.
Jojo actually is familiar with Bruce Timm’s animated Supergirl, and probably could have drawn that, but I wanted to see if she remembered the New 52 Supergirl design (which I have shown her multiple times).
She didn’t. But she tried. New 52 Supergirl actually doesn’t have a skirt, and she’s supposed to have a cape. The military touches and the sash makes me think that Jojo is also thinking of the new Captain Marvel design. I had shown her that also, but she didn’t remember it when she drew Captain Marvel.
This pretty much looks like Supergirl and Captain Marvel smooshed together. Which is just fine.

Today Jojo draws Dark Claw!
This week, Jojo is doing alternate versions of famous heroes. Today we get a special treat: Dark Claw, the Wolverine/Batman mash up from the Amalgam universe!
You see, back in 1996 the Marvel and DC universes had a big fight. Then they… I dunno, kissed and made a baby? It was confusing. What we got was the Amalgam universe, which was a mix of the two.
Jojo’s version of Dark Claw is close to the real one. The only real difference is the real Dark Claw’s mask is a mix of Wolverine’s, Batman’s and general terrible 90s design. Jojo decided to just give him Wolverine’s mask AND Batman’s ears. She says it gives him a “better silhouette.”
She’s really using her CalArts training now.

Today Jojo draws Nightstar… or Rule 63 Robin… or really just a Robin-themed stripper.
This week Jojo is drawing children of famous super heroes. We got a request for Nightstar, the future daughter of Nightwing and Firestar. I’d actually never heard of this character but she sounds fun and Jojo did great drawings of Robin and Firestar. It seemed like a great idea, let’s just see what Jojo drew….
AHH GOD KILL IT WITH FIRE!
First off… she has tiny hoof feet. But we’ve always known that’s how Jojo draws “sexy” high heels. She took her idea of Starfire (slutty alien) and mixed it with Robin’s costume, to just get “slutty Robin.” I asked her why there was no elements of Starfire’s costume and she said, “The Starfire part is the slutty-ness” Fair enough.
It just looks like someone at one of those unfortunate super hero burlesque shows that I’ve been trying so hard to ignore.
Let’s all just look at a nice drawing. Like Horse Thor. We all like Horse Thor.
EDIT: Someone pointed out that I wrote Firestar (the marvel character) instead of Starfire. I called her Starfire the second two times in the post so I’ll call this an understandable typo and give myself a pass.

Today Jojo draws Rip Hunter, Time Master!
This week, Jojo is drawing offspring of super heroes. Today we get Booster Gold’s son from the future, Rip Hunter the Time Master. First off, let me explain what happened.
Jojo “famously” believes that Booster Gold sounds like a brand of beer and, of course, that’s how she drew him. When I asked her to draw Booster’s son, I honestly expected her to draw a can of Booster Gold Light.
She didn’t though. Rip’s beer can reflects his position as a time master and his individuality from his father. By that, I mean he’s wearing a baseball cap instead of a football helmet. Rip Hunter probably likes baseball, right?
The only thing wrong with this drawing is that Rip doesn’t wear a cape.
If you have any more suggestions for heroes’ kids, make sure to let us know!

Today Jojo draws Huntress (Helena Wayne).
This week Jojo is drawing the children of famous super heroes. Today we get the daughter of Batman and Catwoman (on an alternate Earth) or as Jojo calls her “Catbat Baby Lady.”
When I saw this, I said, “She just looks like Batgirl. Where’s the Catwoman influence?” Jojo responded, “Batman and Catwoman look exactly the same. They both have pointy ears.”
I guess I can’t argue with that. All I’ll do is post an example of how purple Huntress is supposed to be. To make Jojo sad (she loves coloring things purple).
There. Now no one is happy.

Today Jojo draws Silk Spectre… sort of. Not really.
Today we’re having Jojo draw characters from Watchmen. As I said, Jojo has read part of Watchmen but not all, and Silk Spectre is a lot of the reason she abandoned it. She told me she remembered her as “super bitchy, with a gross costume.” Jojo was also frustrated that when Dr. Manhattan took her to Mars she was all like, “oooh I want to fight about our relationship instead of being amazed that I’m on mars!” (Jojo’s words, not mine. I love Watchmen, don’t lynch me).
So she drew what she remembered: a sullen, bitchy woman in a gross costume. I don’t know that you can say this is Silk Spectre though. The boots look kinda like the boots from the movie, and I guess the bathing suit-thing is not totally off. But in the comic she’s wearing a yellow, see-through dress over the whole outfit, and has flat hair. I think she’s remembering the hair of the original Silk Spectre, Sally Jupiter, who had a 40s style hair cut that was a little bit like this, a very little bit. And anyway, Sally Jupiter also wore a sort of yellow dress as a costume, and Jojo was trying to draw her daughter.
Also, there’s no excusing the hoop earrings and headband.
This does look like it could be a super hero from the 80s, a lot of them looked a little like this. I like this brand new character Jojo has accidentally created.
I call her Bitchy 80s Lady.

Today Jojo draws Alfred Pennyworth AND Ace the Bat-Hound!
This week I’ve asked Jojo to draw Batman’s many allies. She had a good idea of what Batgirl looked like, she mixed up Nightwing and Batman Beyond a little, and… well she certainly drew Batwoman.
Today I asked her to draw Oracle, or Red Robin, or Red Hood, or Spoiler, or Bat-Wing or Black Bat… well needless to say she just stared at me with that expression I’ve learned to call: “please stop saying words I’ve never heard of.”
Two characters she HAD heard of were Batman’s faithful butler, Alfred and Batman’s often non-canon pooch, Ace the Bat-Hound!
It’s hard to judge either of these because they’ve both looked a bunch of different ways. Alfred changes depending on the actor playing him or the artist drawing him. As long as he’s a serious butler with a mustache (or not even), I’d say it’s accurate.
As for Ace, he was originally a German Shepard, but she pretty much drew him as Scooby-Doo. Which is fair.

Today Jojo draws Batwoman (twice)!

This week, Jojo is drawing Batman’s many allies, but today we had a brand new experience. For the first time, I asked Jojo to do a drawing over. The finished drawing was her second attempt, the rough sketch was what she handed me first. Let’s talk about them separately.

Finished: This drawing is great and it looks a lot like the real Batwoman. From comments on her Nightwing drawing, she knew that her version of him looked a lot like Batwoman. So she pretty much re-created that costume. She also knew that Batwoman was a lesbian but she tastefully didn’t let that effect her choices when designing her. The only things wrong are she made the mask red instead of black, and the inside of her cape is black instead of red. Great work.

Sketch: Here’s what happened when she gave me this.

Jojo: “How’s this?”

Me: “… Why does she have a unibrow? Is that chest hair? Why are her hips shaped like she’s a snake who ate a watermelon? Why does she not have a mask, but does have bat ears? Is that chest hair?!

Y-you have to do that over. Jojo, you have to. No, you have to.

You have to.”

Today Jojo draws Batman Beyond (kinda)!
So this week I’ve been having Jojo draw Batman allies from memory. She did a really good Batgirl and I thought she was on the right track with Nightwing, but when I asked her to draw Terry McGinnis, the Batman of the future, I realized what went wrong.
Jojo clearly had seen Nightwing and Terry and she had a general idea that they were both teen “batmen”. With these two drawings side by side, it’s clear she jumbled up the details of the two.
Yesterday she drew Dick Grayson wearing Terry’s costume (with Batwoman’s gloves). Today she’s drawn Terry, wearing pretty much Nightwing’s costume but with Terry’s more wing-like cape, and basically regular Batman’s head.
She did say, “I knew there was a blue one and a red one.”
The really tragic thing for me is that this is probably the best Batman drawing she’s ever done, and it’s a mistake.
The tragic thing for Jojo is I just showed her a picture of Stephanie Brown’s Batgirl costume and she saw how much purple she could have drawn.
I think she’s going to cry.

Today Jojo draws Nightwing.
This week, I’m asking Jojo to draw Batman’s allies from memory, and who better than the original Robin, Dick Grayson himself: Nightwing?
This drawing is actually very close to Nightwing’s current “New 52” costume, which looks like this. The only real mistakes are giving him the wrong kind of mask (Dick still wears a Robin-style domino mask) and making his symbol explicitly a bat, instead of kind of a bird (which is a pretty easy mistake to make).
With his recent costume change, getting his color right was going to be tricky, however there was one aspect of the character that Jojo was sure about, saying, “he’s either red or blue right? either way, he’s definitely angsty.”
