Today Jojo draws Doctor Doom.

All this week I’m asking Jojo to draw super villains from memory. Like her Green Goblin yesterday, this drawing is surprisingly accurate.

Jojo said she remembered that Doom was a “green robot” and I assumed she’d draw exactly that. But she wound up drawing him right, with the green robe and cape over the metal armor. I could be nit picky and say that his tunic should cover both shoulders, and he should have two golden circles as clasps on his cape. Plus Doom doesn’t wear green gloves and does generally carry a pistol-looking thing on his belt (not that I’ve ever seen him use it.)

She only got one thing completely wrong, but it does throw off his whole look. She gave him big dopey metal eyebrows. It makes him look silly. I know he’s trying to look mean and imposing in this drawing, but he looks like some lovable robot from a children’s show, dressed up as Doom.

Considering how whimsically she drew Reed, Sue, Ben and Johnny of the Fantastic Four, I suppose this Doom makes sense.

Happy Hanukkah!

Well, happy fourth day of Hannukah. But what better way to celebrate than with the Fantastic Four? This, of course, stars Jojo’s versions of The Thing (probably the most prominent Jewish super hero), The Human Torch, Invisible Woman and Mr. Fantastic.

I love how happy Thing is with his dreidel, while his non-Jewish friends enjoy a cup of coffee.. brewed on Human Torch’s head. I can understand why Reed and Sue aren’t celebrating the holiday, but using Johnny as a stove top just makes them look like jerks.

Well, either way, we hope you have a pleasant next four days of candles.

Today Jojo draws The Human Torch.

This week I’ve been having Jojo draw the Fantastic Four. She’s now drawn them all, having done Mr. Fantastic, Thing and Invisible Woman already.

This drawing of Human Torch is fairly accurate. She did draw him with fire instead of arms, as opposed to having arms on fire. Does that make sense? Anyway, I like that he’s in a similarly joyous pose as his older sister was yesterday.

When she handed me this, Jojo said, “I gave him hot pants… get it? Because… he’s…. get it? …. get it?” She then devolved into unintelligible giggling.

For several minutes.

Today Jojo draws Invisible Woman!

This week Jojo is drawing members of the Fantastic Four. She did very well with Thing, and pretty well with Mr. Fantastic, but she was less sure of herself with Invisible Woman.

Me: “Draw another one of the Fantastic Four.”

Jojo: “Okay, um.. well there’s the token woman, right?”

Me: “Yep.”

Jojo: “I don’t know what her power is… when was she created?”

Me: “1961”

Jojo: “So… she probably shoots birth control pills from her hands? Wait, does she turn invisible?”

Me: “Yes.”

Jojo: “Alright, I drew her but I couldn’t figure out how to put the 4 symbol over her breasts.”

Me: “Lots of real comic artists have that problem too.”

Jojo: “I put it on her belly.”

Today Jojo draws The Thing!

This week I’m having Jojo draw The Fantastic Four from memory. Each day I’ll tell her “draw one of them” until she’s drawn all four, without telling her their names. Here’s what she said about this drawing:

Jojo: “His name is the thingy, he’s made of dried riverbed.”

Me: “He’s supposed to made of bricks, or rocks.”

Jojo: “But he’s orange. He’s made of dried riverbed.”

This is a very, very accurate drawing. You can even imagine him yelling his classic battle cry, “It’s clobberin’ time!”

Although in this case I imagine Jojo yelling, “It’s Jojo-ing time!”

I’m going to see if I can get her to start saying that. For real.

Today Jojo draws Mr. Fantastic!

It was recently brought to our attention that Jojo hasn’t drawn the Fantastic Four yet. I apologize for this oversight. My idea is to do the FF the way we did Doctor Who, where I just tell Jojo, “Draw a member of the Fantastic Four” until she’s got four of them (rather than give her hints by telling her their names).

She handed me this drawing and said, “I drew a stretchy guy. There’s a stretchy guy, right?” Yes there is Jojo and his name is Reed Richards, Mr. Fantastic. She got his costume just about right, the gloves and boots should be white or black, it should be white around the 4 symbol, and Reed doesn’t wear a mask of any kind.

The best part of this is that she gave him skinny stretchy limbs, but a lumpy potato-filled body. Jojo knows you can’t tell he’s a super hero if he doesn’t have lumpy potato muscles.

Today, Jojo draws She-Hulk.

Now, She-Hulk is an interesting case because she doesn’t have one iconic outfit, she’s worn everything from the tattered remains of whatever dress she happened to be wearing, to over sized sweaters. She does currently wear a sort of purple swim suit so combined with the fact that Jojo drew her as generally a “lady hulk”, that means she got it right.

There’s still some stuff to talk about here, She-Hulk, despite her name is generally depicted as attractive, something that Jojo did not do (I don’t know what’s going on with her nose). I do like that this drawing is a perfect mix between the potato muscles she gives men, and the giant thighs she gives women. This might be the most perfect Jojo drawing we’ll ever get. When I asked why her feet are pointed like that, Jojo said, “She’s a hulk, so she’s kinda derpy.” Fair enough. The one detail Jojo got flat out wrong is the red hair, She-Hulk has green/black hair. When confronted with this, Jojo maintained that her version was better, saying, “It has more contrast… from a design standpoint it’s… something… the end.”

Yes Jojo. The end, indeed.
