I'm a writer. I read a lot of comics. My friend Jojo is an artist. She doesn't read any comics.

At lunch, she draws super heroes from memory. Her memory is not always very good.

As you look at these drawings, I can not stress enough that Jojo is a professional artist, and a full grown woman. It's important to remember that.

Today Jojo draws The Lizard.
I wanted to see Jojo’s take on Spidey’s latest movie antagonist. I didn’t like how he looked in the movie and I was hoping Jojo could improve him.
SHE TOTALLY DID!
I told her he was a scientist who became a lizard-man, and even though there’s few ways to get that wrong, she’s surprised us before. This one is great though. I love how thoughtful he looks, and that he’s little fat. Perfect.
He should team up with Jojo’s (much less accurate) Doctor Octopus.

Today Jojo draws The Guardians of the Galaxy!
This concludes our one-year anniversary request week. The number one request we got was for The Guardians of the Galaxy, probably because Marvel just announced they’d be getting a movie in 2014.
I asked Jojo if she had any idea who they were (she didn’t) and told her “They live in space, their leader’s name is Star Lord… you already drew Rocket Raccoon.”
She stopped listening somewhere around “they live in space-” and went off to draw this. She clearly heard the word “guardians,” remembered the movie Legend of the Guardians:The Owls of Ga’Hoole and just went to town.
So here it is: giant owls with planets in their talons, as they shoot stars and vomit moons.
I don’t know about you, but I feel like the galaxy is now thoroughly guarded.

Today Jojo draws Squirrel Girl!
Remembered Heroes Anniversary Request Week Continues! Tumblr user neveralarch requested the Great Lakes Avengers, especially Squirrel Girl. We’ll see if we get to the others (Jojo could probably guess what Flatman looks like) but I wanted to make sure she did Squirrel Girl, cause she’s the best. She talks to squirrels, she climbs trees and she defeated Thanos once. That’s what you want in a character!
What Jojo drew is very close to accurate. She gave her a mask instead of weird eye markings, and she didn’t give her buck teeth. Also Jojo’s drawing is missing her nut sack. Where will she keep her nuts??? Also, I’m not kidding, she really has that!
Squirrel Girl is a character that is way wackier for real, than Jojo could hope to match. And Jojo’s drawn Horse Thor.

Today Jojo draws Iron Patriot.
So this week accidentally turned into Red, White and Blue Week. I say accidentally because Super Girl isn’t supposed to have white gloves, and if she’d drawn Spider-Woman right, it would have been red and yellow.
So let’s run with it. Here’s how today went.
Me: “Hey Jojo, why not draw Iron Patriot? He’s when Norman Osborn, the Green Goblin, took over SHEILD and renamed it HAMMER and then started his own Avengers made up of villains. This was all during Dark Reign, which led into Siege when Osborn attacks Asgard, which was floating above the midwest and-“
Jojo: “I don’t know any of those words.”
Me: “Just smoosh Iron Man and Captain America together.”
AND SHE DID! AND IT WAS WONDERFUL! My only critique is that she gave him a cape. I asked her why he has a cape and she said, “Why wouldn’t he?” The answer of course is that neither Cap nor Iron Man have capes.
To which she said, “Well, they both should.”

Today Jojo draws Spider-Girl (I guess).
So I actually asked Jojo to draw Spider-Woman, the Marvel character who has nothing to do with Spider-Man and everything to do with having the most complicated back story ever (for a while she was a super evolved spider, and she spent time as quadruple agent between Hydra, SHIELD and the Avengers).
What Jojo drew looks much more like Spider-Girl, the alternate reality daughter of Peter Parker. I like how she just gave her the standard outfit she thinks all female heroes wear, just with blue webs where everyone else has skin.
Plus, she’s red, white and blue, just in time for the Fourth of July.
So that’s fun.

Today Jojo draws Colossus, based off this t-shirt!
We’re sticking with Jojo drawing characters off of shirts I wear. I’m excited about this one because I’ve always wanted her to draw Colossus, but she had no idea who he was. She still doesn’t, clearly.
She got his general shape right, and the coloring would have been almost impossible for her to glean from the t-shirt. It looks like she assumed he could fly, but maybe someone is throwing him (in some sort of reverse fastball special).
When I showed her a full picture of him, she said, “Ooooooh, I see. He’s a mechanical Captain Planet.” So really, Colossus got off light. We all know what Jojo thinks Captain Planet looks like.

Today Jojo draws Toad, from this t-shirt!
A few weeks ago, we missed a day and Jojo just drew Scarlet Witch from the t-shirt I was wearing. It turned out great so we’re going to do some more t-shirt drawings this week! Starting with a character from the same t-shirt!
The best part of these is seeing Jojo’s interpretation of a classic piece of Jack Kirby art. She really, didn’t know what to make of this drawing. She was very confused to learn his name was Toad, as she thought he had a cat face. She also didn’t realize his mouth was colored teeth-color and so she gave him an awful gummy maw. But real toads don’t have teeth, so that works.
I love how she made his eyes even more lopsided, and really captured how awful he’s supposed to look. She says his power is “to creep you out.”
That’s pretty accurate.

Today Jojo draws Dark Claw!
This week, Jojo is doing alternate versions of famous heroes. Today we get a special treat: Dark Claw, the Wolverine/Batman mash up from the Amalgam universe!
You see, back in 1996 the Marvel and DC universes had a big fight. Then they… I dunno, kissed and made a baby? It was confusing. What we got was the Amalgam universe, which was a mix of the two.
Jojo’s version of Dark Claw is close to the real one. The only real difference is the real Dark Claw’s mask is a mix of Wolverine’s, Batman’s and general terrible 90s design. Jojo decided to just give him Wolverine’s mask AND Batman’s ears. She says it gives him a “better silhouette.”
She’s really using her CalArts training now.

Today Jojo draws Zombie Spider-Man!
This week Jojo will be drawing alternate versions of heroes (mostly characters from alternate realities but we might also do famous alternate costumes or phases that heroes went through).
We start out simple. Zombie Spider-Man, how could she get that wrong. Oh here’s how, she forgot what Spider-Man’s costume looks like. It’s crazy because she did a better job the first time she drew him almost a year ago.
Well, the zombie part is pretty perfect, I like that he’s webbed a brain to eat later.

Today Jojo draws… I’m going to call him Hawk Widow!
This week, Jojo’s been drawing children of famous super heroes. So far, she’s done characters that “actually” exist, but I also wanted to do at least one “what if so and so had a kid” drawings. We got more than one request for the offspring of Hawkeye and Black Widow, so here we go!
We already know Jojo thinks Hawkeye should have a hawk sticking out of his eye and that Black Widow would be more effective if she hurled buckets of spiders at people.
That could not have prepared me for what she drew today. It’s a man with a hawk head, crying spiders from his “hawk eye” and filling up buckets. Which he shoots from a bow. I’ve used the phrases “fever dreams” and “kill it with fire” many times in the past, but I don’t think I ever meant them as hard as I do right now.
Good work Jojo.
Although that looks like an eagle head. Not a hawk. Points off for that one.
